Business Metrics vs. KPI's

We recommend that you use dashboards to report on the two basic types of veterinary business metrics: business metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). What’s the difference? Business metrics are your business objectives: Monthly, quarterly and annual revenues; revenues from dental exams, the mix of dogs, cats and exotics in your practice. KPI’s are measures of activity that impact your business objectives: new patients added per month, number of dental exams per month, average wait times, revenue generated per doctor.

Metrics are the standards by which that you measure your performance:

  1. Current budgets and cash flow, and projections for 1 to 3-5 years out
  2. Fee/Practice cost profitability analysis
  3. Market fee analysis
  4. Marketing and Social media reviews to meet growth targets
  5. Cornerstone software or other PMS support to turn data about KPIs and financial indicators into usable information
  6. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that impact your operational and financial performance
  7. Practice operational and financial trend analysis, and compared to other similar practices and industry standards
  8. Physical and software inventory management for profitability
  9. Decision-making for equipment purchase and major cash outlays
  10. Salary and total compensation analysis for doctors and staff
  11. Compensation/benefits package design
  12. Prepare and align your practice for your exit strategy
